Hi,
Good question. Hopefully someone with a more techical background will answer you as well. For me personally, I would suggest being as well rounded in IT as possible...I work for a large computer manufacturer and knowing as much as you can will be very helpful...not only technical subjects but, business/dealing with people-psychology/finance-accounting, etc. As for technical subjects...networking, computer security and clould computing are the big technical areas these days and into the future.
Good luck!

Mike’s Answer

The beauty of being a computer science or software major is that regardless of what business sector you wish to pursue, there is almost always a need for software engineers.

I personally love video games and have for as long as I can remember. Thus working for a video game company made sense to me. I am surrounded incredibly smart people who are also passionate about games.

Are you into music? Maybe work on iTunes, or Spotify.
Are you into food? Maybe work at Yelp or GrubHub.

The possibilities are endless and demand is incredibly high for people with your skill set. My advice to you is just find the path the excites you the most and pursue that. The other great advantage of being in software is that you can gain relevant work experience right from home for free! If you want to work on a mobile application, its free to learn and develop apps on Android and since you already know Java, you will be able to pick it up quickly.

Good Luck!
