Hi Emily,

you can look around and see which of your favorite brands use illustration on their products or packaging. Lot of food and beverage companies use art to sell their products. Think of all the coffee packaging, chocolate wrappers or cereal or tea. Starbucks Coffee is a great example.

Another option that comes to mind is clothing companies who have illustrators, textile designers eg. Eddie Bauer. The bigger the company, the likelier that they will have their own in house team of artist who do their work (and they are not just hiring an outside design firm).

Hallmark is another good example, they have tons of artist creating greeting cards and gift. Or Anthropology or Land of Nod. So look around, see what kind of art makes your heart happy, then do some research on companies that match your interest, see if they have in house art department and go from there. ENJOY, the world is looking forward to seeing your work!

Lisa’s Answer

Lot's of companies hire graduates with degrees in illustration. Illustration is a pretty broad degree, that can be applied in areas of marketing, book publishing, gaming companies etc. Illustration can be applied as an art career. If you have any interest in a medical career, medical illustrators are in great demand.

Lisa recommends the following next steps:

Pick a college that has a good illustration program. Do your research. When researching colleges be sure to check out their job placement rate as a part of your research. That will help you narrow the field. Make sure you have a strong portfolio. The portfolio should include several different types of media (paint, digital, sketches etc.), pieces should be complete and vary in style.
