JR’s Answer

The best way to influence policy making is to have a relationship with your lawmakers at the local, state, & federal levels. Regularly meet with them to discuss issues and possible solutions. Be prepared to talk about the impact the issue has on you and others like you. Try to work with others with the same opinion so that your issue is more likely to be heard. There is power in numbers. Grassroots petitions and letters to the editor can also help you get attention that is needed. Utilize social media too!

JR recommends the following next steps:

Research the issue to help bring facts to the attention of your lawmakers.
Work with other like minded electeds.
Get onto the mailing lists for your lawmakers and attend their events so you build a relationship with them and start to become a familiar face.

Students are often great sources of policy inspiration! Activists such as Greta Thunberg and the students currently mobilizing rallies for racial justice are some examples. If you are more interested in influencing policy through writing and research, this is a great time to identify issues you are passionate about and learn everything you can about them. Then write and communicate your ideas through local newspapers, blogs, school papers, journals and websites.

Find a teacher or professor whom you admire, with whom you can discuss ideas. Teachers love students who are passionate about their subject and who are thinking deep thoughts. These are a great source of connections and networks.

As you think about where you might want to bring your policy creativity, ask your guidance counselor for suggestions for informational interviews -- that way you can start early in your career to try out your policy ideas on professionals working in the field and to really get a sense on what type of place you would like to work.

Good luck and hope to see you making great creative policy solutions!
