When applying for scholarships, which ones should you focus on?

Hi Sariah,
Great question! I would say there are a couple key things to focus on when looking for relevant scholarships:
- Try to look for scholarships that are in your relevant major or school. These scholarships usually have a smaller candidate pool than the large national scholarships.
- Carefully review the requirements for the scholarship. You don't want to waste your time, effort, and maybe money applying for a scholarship that you don't even qualify for.
- Make sure you are comfortable with the requirements to keep your scholarship, if applicable. Some scholarships are dispersed over a period of time and require to maintain a certain GPA or continue to participate in an organization.
Hope this helps and good luck!

HI Sariah,
In this day and age, with the cost of school, I would not try to limit your focus. Of course you do need to consider how much money you will actually need for school. I would try to get a scholarship that covers the entire 2-year or 4-year timeframe that you want to attend school. I would also encourage having enough money to pay for books, other incidentals, as well as maybe the ability to live on campus.
I would offer that you should consider looking for a variety of scholarships. I think that there are some that are offered to protected classes (like people of color or women) and there are scholarships for specific skills. I had a family member who won a scholarship for writing a story that was chosen to win. I offer this since some people focus only on scholarships related to academic achievement.
You should not just apply for scholarships before your freshman year, you should apply every year to make sure that you have the money that you need to meet all of your academic dreams.
