What are some of the best ways for a high schooler to learn more about the medical field?
I will be attending GHS's MedEx Academy (internship/volunteering at local hospitals) this summer and will be taking Biology II honors this coming school year, but I would like to know if there are other recommended ways to learn about healthcare during the school semester while in high school. Thanks! #high-school #medicine #healthcare

Hi Evan,
I would highly recommend researching opportunities in your local community where you can shadow or volunteer in the medical field most likely in hospitals nearby! There are some programs that have mentorship opportunities available for high school students. If you know anyone in the medical field then it is a great way to reach out and network!

Great question and an excellent field to be interested in. Very exciting ! I would recommend volunteering at local hospitals and/or nursing homes over the summer while also asking if you can do a ride-a-long with a paramedic to learn more about the ins and outs. I know a lot of hospitals have awesome summer programs that offer a mentorship with nurses and doctors. I wish you the best of luck !

Volunteer at your local hospital or low-income clinic. Ask physicians, PAs or other clinical providers if you can shadow them.

You could volunteer at your local hospital just to get a sense of a health care environment, different departments and to begin developing a network of people you can interview about your particular area of interest. I personally obtained a job working at a state run hospital as a nursing assist the summer between my junior and senior year of high school - this is the best way to get a sense of whether the medical field is for you (it convinced me that it was NOT). Good luck!
