Do applying as undeclared hold you back from graduating from a university in four years?

I want to graduate in four years but I feel that applying as undeclared may cause me to spend time and money on classes that won't be useful for my major. #money #colleges #money-management

Not at all as your freshman and sophomore years can be used to explore various fields so that you can see what peaks your interest. I went to a liberal arts college and did not declare my major until junior year after taking art history, political science, French, calculus and economics. I eventually majored in economics and business which lead me to my career today so please explore and just learn as a broadly educated mind is important for any job and to be able to communicate effectively.

This won't be a problem! California has at least 39 hours of core classes you must take, if attending a public school. If you focus on them that first year, you should be fine - as they are required for all majors. Meet with an advisor to make sure the classes you take will count, regardless of what you later select as your major.

No. Most colleges have about 2 years of REQUIRED core curriculum that everyone must take, and you will normally take most of the generic courses during the first 2 years of college.

You should pick a major before beginning your Junior year, so that you’ll have time to finish the mandatory coursework towards the major of your choice.
