What to expect in an interview for a volunteer mediator position?

I am applying for a volunteer position with the county dispute resolution center. It is staffed with professionals, 40% of which are attorneys. I am not an attorney, and have no experience in mediation, but, being older, have a fair amount of relevant life experience. If accepted, they will train me.

Other than basic interview questions about my experience, availability, and degree of motivation/dedication, what else should I expect to be asked during the interview? #lawyer #mediator #ADR #mediation #attorney

Congratulations on going into dispute resolution! I’m not in that particular field, but I have done a lot of interviews and I would imagine that they would give you a number of real-life scenarios to see how you would respond. For example, two neighbors are arguing over a tree that is growing between their yards. One wants to cut it down and the other wants to keep it, how do you advise them? If I were you I would research methods of dispute resolution so you can be prepared to answer some scenario questions.

Thank you comment icon Thanks! The neighbor -tree issue is always my go-to example when people ask me what mediation does! Kim Igleheart
Thank you comment icon Hi Abigail! I got selected! They did not ask any situational questions (surprise!), just the regular stuff. I was not overly pleased with my responses, but must have done okay. Thanks for the feedback! Kim Igleheart

from my experience at a NYC center, I’d expect them to ask questions to make sure you’re a cultural fit. For example, if their mediation style is facilitative, they’ll want to screen out people that are too directive. Good luck! It’s truly feel good work (when it goes well).
