Some of the top qualities necessary for being an attorney are as follows:



  1. Strong Analytical Skills

  2. You have to be creative

  3. Strong Research Skills

  4. You need to have great interpersonal skills

  5. Ability to think logically and make reasonable judgement based on information presented and not emotionally

  6. You need to be able to work long hours researching and taking notes

  7. Be a great public speaker

  8. The ability to keep up with developments and changes to the legal field.

  9. You must have the ability to understand complex information encountered in legal research.

  10. Very strong writing skills


There is typically 7 years of college necessary to become a lawyer. 4 Year bachelors degree program and 3 years of law school. It is possible but extremely difficult to complete college and law school in less than 7 years. Ideally, you will want to major in the industry that you wish to become an attorney for. For example, if you want to be a public defender or a criminal prosecutor, you might seek a bachelors degree in criminal justice.


Some other degrees are in English, Economics, Philosophy, Prelaw, Criminal Justice.

You can generally major in whatever you want. I had classmates in law school who majored in biology, business, engineering, English, etc.
