How long does it take to become a lawyer?

Hi my name is Kylea. I am a 6th grader in middle school doing a project. For this project we are supposed to create a cover letter, resume, and look into jobs we might be interested in becoming. I have asked this question because I am interested in becoming either a doctor or lawyer. I am doing some background information about both careers and would like to know more about how long it takes to become a lawyer, or what colleges would help to set up a good career in becoming a lawyer. #law #lawyer #attorney

Ruha’s Answer

Hi Kylee, it takes seven years to become a lawyer officially - 4 years of undergrad and then after that, 3 years of law school. You can do your undergraduate degree in most fields (like you could do an undergrad degree in psychology, or english, or even in engineering or biology) but you should pick an undergrad degree that sort of helps you towards your law degree - something that makes you do research, writing and a lot of reading. Degrees in English, Political Science, Psychology or Economics are some examples.

Thank you comment icon Wow! Thank you so much. This has helped me a lot with my research, thank you fro your time Ruha Devanesan! Sincerely, Kylea S. Kylea

Paul V.’s Answer

I am still "learning" the practice of law ten years after I graduated from law school. As part of my continuing education curriculum, I need to stay up-to-date on the law by taking classes and submitting my information to my state bar association. The law is so dynamic and changes so there is always something fresh and new to learn about.

Thank you comment icon Wow! That sounds very interesting learning about new things all of the time. This is really a big help. Thank you, Kylea S. Kylea

Brian D.’s Answer

Becoming a lawyer requires 4 years of college and three years of law school. After graduating from law school, you need to pass an exam (called a "bar exam") in the state you want to practice law in. If you pass the exam, you can then practice law in that state.

Quoited by ABA and the TBA. 2. Depends on who you want to work for or what friends you know. Most new lawyers have some support. 3. Texas in 1983 said that out of 200,000 lawyers in Texas, 100,000 had to by there bar license, so there is so much hidden. My attorney was Mr. Edwards of Nacogdoches, TX he had 50 years in the practice. I filed Attorney Mal. You don't tell people the truth. I filed a 10,000,000 on the HPD in 1983 on a friends behalf. Want to go there. I have a case right now out of Dallas on the TX. Board of Pardons and Paroles. I been studying law since 1977. I don't mind digging up bones. I am known in California.
