You're kind of asking 3 questions in that one. One does NOT have to go to college to become a professional singer. If you read the bios of various singers, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, nor Carrie Underwood have music degrees. However, many people go to college to develop the skill and connections to make it in the industry: Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, and Elton John all have degrees in music.

Anyone has the potential to be a one hit wonder, especially with the TV talent shows now. Will you? That's up to society, potential isn't often realized.

Get a job... Musicians typically do not get jobs like a banker or an engineer. Musicians are self employed. You are an independent contractor and thus you must have 100s of jobs to make a living. You take care of your own taxes, your own insurance, your own everything. If you want to teach at a university or K-12 schools, then yes you will have to earn degree(s). But to perform, it is incredibly difficult to make a living. Even more so if you are not touring. That is why "making connections" is very important in this industry. Your ability to make a living depends on how people like working with you and how consistent you are. There is no tenure since you go project to project. If you and a contractor don't see eye to eye, then they and their friends won't hire you and you could lose your ability to make a living.
