Ashley Brooke’s Answer

It really depends on what you want your function to be at a nonprofit- that is what type of job do you want to do?

Depending on the nonprofit, they may need a variety of workers. For example:

-IT/web designers to build nonprofit websites, apps, and computer systems

-marketing/ fundraising (could major in public relations, marketing, communications)

-social workers usually work directly with people being helped (children, homeless, veterans, etc)

-biologists/natural resources management for environmental conservation organizations

-nurses and emergency responders for organizations like the red cross

You could do any number of jobs at a nonprofit, which means you could major in any type of field and find a fit at a nonprofit that needs your skills. Identify what kind of work do you enjoy doing (work directly with those in need?or support the work from behind the scenes?) and what social causes are you passionate about (youth development, animal rights, hunger and poverty, veterans, etc.).

Some colleges may have a nonprofit leadership undergraduate courses or a credential like the Certified Nonprofit Professional (https://www.nonprofitleadershipalliance.org/credential/) that you can combine with your chosen degree program.

What type of work do you want to do?

Is there a particular place you want to work at?

In general for non-profits, the best way to get in is to volunteer or intern there.

You can check out details about social work positions here:

I think having a MPA (masters of public administration) is a useful or even a MBA. Depends on the role you'd like to have - if you aspire to help manage nonprofits, then MPA or MBA provides that leadership and foundational experience. But in general, depending on the nonprofit's focus area - a bachelor/AA degree in social work, or anything works!
