Kelly’s Answer

Hi Luke,

This answer certainly varies depending on what the individual specializes in. I have a few in my network and their subject matter varies greatly. One, like Cicily indicated, is contracted by employers who suspect their employees are misusing disability, workers compensation, or medical leaves. Usually this happens when employees (often who don't like the person) report the individual for a bogus claim. He is a person who would blend in with the community, but follows the behaviors of the people suspected of misconduct. On example is if someone claims to be unable to move due to a severe back injury, the investigator might find the person committing the fraud on an upside-rollercoaster at an amusement park. Before doing this, the case is reviewed for evidence and validity (if it was on camera, did the person ask for immediate medical attention, does the story of the claimant "line up").

Kelly’s Answer

Hello Luke,

The answer to this question can greatly differ based on the individual's area of expertise. I know a few people in my circle who specialize in different areas. For instance, as Cicily pointed out, one of them is hired by companies who suspect their employees are abusing disability benefits, workers compensation, or medical leaves. This usually occurs when coworkers, who may not be fond of the person, report them for a false claim. This investigator is a master of blending into the crowd, closely observing the actions of those suspected of wrongdoing. For example, if someone claims they can't move due to a severe back injury, the investigator might catch them enjoying a thrilling ride on an upside-down rollercoaster at a theme park. But before jumping into action, the case is thoroughly examined for evidence and credibility (like if the incident was caught on camera, did the person seek immediate medical help, does the claimant's story add up). There are also others who are experts in areas like missing children, trafficking, and more.

May I ask, what sparked your interest in this field?
