HI Tanner. Great question! This is a very exciting career options, to serve our nation. A criminal justice degree would definitely be a good start. However, depending on what law enforcement specialty you are looking to focus on, for example Cyber security, Fraud, Criminal, Counterintelligence, etc. You might want tailor your study to that law enforcement specialty. If you are interested in law enforcement for one of our military branches, the Air Force has the Office of Special Investigations. https://www.osi.af.mil/

James’s Answer

The most common degree to seek would be Criminal Justice. Then there are more specific degrees if you want to pursue a more specific job. You could pursue a forensics degree, which could land you a lab job. You could pursue a degree in homeland security. That could give you a better chance at a federal job. Then there are even more specific degrees. Degrees like cybersecurity. In a growing cyber world, that is a field that could be very attractive to those pursuing a law enforcement career.

Hey Tanner,

Rebecca had a great answer and I would like to add it's also important to review the FBI Academy and CIA training requirements and physical / mental health standards to ensure that you will be able to meet those before considering a career as an agent. These are two of the nations top intelligence organizations, so their standards are very high. I would also consider looking into potential careers within the military--Air Force OSI is a good one. There are also numerous other routes you can go including various intelligence analyst, cyber intelligence, and human intelligence positions to name a few.

Hope this helps,

Deric
