Consultancy and Engineering Design
I'm currently studying mechanical engineering and after a few internships, I realized that most engineers really don't really get design say. I've looked online and it seems that there exist mechanical engineering consultancy firms of varying specialization, ranging from general engineering to specific focus areas, all seemingly doing the design work exported from a contracting customer.
I'm curious if someone in mechanical consulting, or who has worked with such firms could tell me what kind of work consultancy firms get (if it is significantly different from work you would do in a non-consulting company), why a company would have another company design its products, and what kind of experience is necessary to work in such a firm. Is the design work commissioned concept generation, design for production, or designing manufacturing repairs/liaison engineering, as the term "design" seems quite nebulous.

The engineering method (also known as engineering design) is a systematic approach used to reach the desired solution to a problem. There are six steps (or phases): idea, concept, planning, design, development, and launch from problem definition to desired result.

These are great career opportunities, but first you need to get to know yourself well enough to have a proper career focus and get to know people who are working in consultancy and engineering design, to see the inside view to make sure that it is indeed suitable.
Getting to know yourself and how your personality traits relate to people involved in various career opportunities is very important in your decision making process. During my many years in Human Resources and College Recruiting, I ran across too many students who had skipped this very important step and ended up in a job situation which for which they were not well suited. Selecting a career area is like buying a pair of shoes. First you have to be properly fitted for the correct size, and then you need to try on and walk in the various shoe options to determine which is fits the best and is most comfortable for you to wear. Following are some important steps which I developed during my career which have been helpful to many .
