Simona’s Answer

Hello Emily,

I had never seen such an interesting question.  After reading your request, I wanted to look into this and see what research I could pull up.  I can only imagine that it would be difficult for a high school student to obtain such training at a young age.  However, after some searching, I was able to find some of the following.

The link below provides information on a Summer Program for high schools students.  A brief description is also listed here: At the National Student Leadership Conference summer Forensic Science program, high school students unravel a mystery as they conduct an investigation and build a body of evidence. Interact with experts in medicine, law enforcement and the legal profession who will give you an insider’s view into the life of a professional forensic scientist.

The link below provides information for both high school and college students.  A brief description follows: A number of exciting opportunities are available for both undergraduate and high school psychology students to get hands-on learning and valuable research experiences in the science of psychology over their summer breaks. Many of these programs have application deadlines soon approaching, so encourage your students to take a look now.

Both links offer opportunities for you to research and see if they provide a good fit for you.  I also recommend the following:

  1. research to see if either is a good fit
  2. check local colleges/universities in your area to see if they can provide volunteer hours to gain experience in this area

I hope this is helpful to you.  Good luck!

Sherry’s Answer

I really like that you're already thinking about internships at this stage of your education. It's always good to get an early start as internships are taken up pretty quickly and there are slim pickings when you think about the amount of students there are looking to acquire them. For forensic psychiatry have you thought about focusing first on the forensic part? Think about checking with your local law enforcement agencies and the internships that they offer. They offer many different ones relating to forensics that go unapplied for. This can get you the forensic experience piece of the career path and set you ahead of others. It will also allow you to see first hand how forensic psychiatrist are needed when it comes to crime solving, criminal cases and testifying. Also, this allows you to start making connections with those working in fields closely related where you may even be able to find a mentor or someone willing to open doors for you and help you along your career journey in psychiatry.

Sherry recommends the following next steps:

Check with the office of the DeKalb County, Fulton County or Gwinnette County Sheriff's office to ask about possible internships. Even volunteer opportunities can be beneficial.
