What kind of training and education is needed for a career in Animation or a as CGI Artist?

I'm very interested in a career revolving around the arts, especially with Animations. Would you have any recommendations for any courses, possible future internships, or even schools that have this type of training? Thank you

Hi Margaret Ann B.,

I'm glad to see that you are interested in a career in the arts. In general these jobs require a lot of training and education in the foundations of art. Most good art schools will provide a solid foundation in the arts regardless of the specific field you want to pursue.

Knowledge of anatomy, composition, color theory, perspective, etc. is particularly important. With regards to animation, specifically, you will really need to have a mastery of anatomy and perspective to correctly depict movement through space. While 3D animation may remove some of the questions work but it is still important to understand what is happening on a basic level. If you don't know how a person jumps the animation will not look real or convincing.

Pursuing an education to get a bachelor of fine arts at an accredited institution will be a great start. Make sure to be observant and try to break down the little movements involved in bigger motions.

Once you're in school look into internships with animation studios but don't ignore video games. A lot of animation goes into gaming.

Andy recommends the following next steps:

Look into bachelor of fine arts programs at universities in your area. Some of the more prestigious in the country include the Rhode Island School of Design, Art Center in Pasadena, and San Jose State University in California.
Keep drawing and practicing every day.
Once you get to school, go to the career center and ask about internship opportunities.

There are both 4-year and 2-year programs as well as more basic or general certificate programs. The DAVE (Digital Animation & Visual Effects) School is actually located on the backlot of Universal Studios in Florida. There is also the Full Sail University in Florida which has certifications that can be done online or in-person, some of which are as short as 7-month certificate programs or more complete Bachelor's degree programs that take 20 months in person or 29 months online.
