Jason’s Answer

Counselors need to be able to empathize, provide reflective listening, and be present in the room with the patient. It will not always be easy to do all three of these depending on who is sitting across from you and the reason that brought them there.
Aside from the academics, you will need to be able to be disciplined enough that you will ensure self-care to avoid burn out. The counseling field and clinically related psych careers tend to throw the youngest and least experienced counselors in the more difficult positions such as crisis counseling, partial care hospitals, and day program settings. This can be tough but you gain a lot of experience with a lot of different situations.

Feel free to ask some more specific questions.
best of luck
