Is Honor’s College a good idea?

As a senior in high school who will be attending a college this time next year, I have been considering applying to honor’s college. I’ve heard that it’s a very rewarding experience but that it also adds extra stress to college. Is it really worth it? #honorscollege

Thank you comment icon I feel that if it's what you want to do, go for it. Take the time to see how taking Honor's would benefit you and your career. -Good luck Lynnsey
Thank you comment icon If I were in your position I'd look into honors college and find out the benefits and if its truly what you'd like to do. If it is still an interest and you are not sure if you can handle it all, take one regular year of college first. It will give you a good idea if you can balance it all. Still, strive to do good and work your hardest. Tia

Kelly’s Answer

I joined the honor's college in order to get a nicer dorm my freshman year. I only did the minimum classes needed to stay in that dorm. Other than that, the honor's classes did not work with my schedule. Most honor's classes are for the general education courses, and I had enough college credit to surpass those. The honor's college could give your resume a bump, but I do not think it would be enough to swing a career decision. I would do what works best with your class schedule. College is about more than just studying, so make sure you have time for other activities.

Jordan’s Answer

Hi John,

I'm impressed by your initiative! I wasn't aware of Honors College until I was already in my first year of college, and I too was also skeptical. However, I now believe Honors College is a great opportunity. Not only will the Honors College be an excellent addition to your resume, but my Honors College offered unique classes that weren't offered to other university students. A couple of those classes I participated in included "Art and the Brain", which was a psychology seminar class centered around how we react to art, and"Would you follow you?", another seminar class that focused on different leadership styles and the importance of emotional intelligence within business. I will note that an honors thesis was required to graduate from the program. Building my thesis was very challenging but extremely rewarding once my thesis was published within my university and also served as a key point of my resume that helped it stand out among great competition.

I encourage you to take advantage of what your own Honors College has to offer!
