Jonathan’s Answer

Tabor,

There are no specific high school classes necessary to become a lawyer. I did not know I wanted to become a lawyer until the middle of college, although both of my parents were lawyers. I would recommend studying hard and taking classes that interest you. Even in college, there are no specific classes necessary to become a lawyer. In law school, there were students with all types of backgrounds, majors, and ages. My recommendation is reading and studying things that interest you prior to taking the LSAT your fourth year of college (at the earliest).

In High School, you need a good standing GPA in your mainstream classes to enter a 4 year college. If you are short in other areas like needing another science class including a lab or reaching a foreign language requirement then you may be on the track of entering a community college. Either way, you should begin taking your required college classes and look into majoring in Criminal Justice or Political Science. Despite how your major is connected into prelaw, after completing your undergraduate degree, you will have to take L -STAT Exam. During college, complete internships! Currently, start networking with lawyers and ask to volunteer in firms. Additionally, you can attend court cases and observe.

Hi Tabor,

You do not have to take certain classes in high school to become a lawyer. Just focus on doing well in your classes so you can have better choices for colleges and financial aid packages. I know that some schools offer criminal justice classes or majors but you do not have to take those courses or major in criminal justice. You can study whatever you want to in college before law school as you are only required to take the LSAT and complete your law school applications to get into law school. I majored in political science, but I went to law school with people who majored in business, engineering, English, etc.

Just focus on developing your problem solving and critical thinking skills in school as that is an important part of being a lawyer. Talk to your school counselors to help stay on track with your academic and career goals (they can help you figure out your classes and what test(s) you need to take). And, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions to make sure that you getting all of the information you need so that you can succeed as a lawyer and an adult.
