Carol’s Answer

Hi Gloria

While I have not recruited specifically for makeup artists, I have found that the best way to find out about any career is to go online and ask. There is information out there that will tell you what people do in certain careers, other sites that might describe a typical day in the role, jobsites with openings and job descriptions as well as salary ranges for the positions, etc. YouTube may have videos explaining the same. If you look at multiple sites, look for consistencies in what they say. This should help you feel more comfortable that the information you are reading is accurate.

I used Google and typed in your question. Here is what I found so far to get you started.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach back out.

Carol

Linda’s Answer

Artists at shoppers drug mart (Canada) typically make $17 per hour plus commission.

MAC makeup Artists make on average ($18-$20)

Sephora is a little lower than all the above and no commission on sales but tons of free product/ gratis.

Freelancing for specific brands (For example, DIOR, SMASHBOX, NARS, etc..) is where you make the highest amount working for someone: usually $18-$25 per hour

If you work for yourself and start your own freelance business, it can be very lucrative if you have tons of clients. Typically people charge anywhere from $75+ for a makeover (thus making $75 per hour). This is very hard to do though because you have to build all your clientele first.

This is all from personal experience, and in Canadian dollars.
