Should a social worker get a masters degree?

I am trying to decide whether I should just receive my bachelor's degree in social work or go on to receive my master's degree.

Hi there,

A masters degree in social work is the better option because it is considered a terminal degree. You’ll be eligible to start getting the hours that you need for your clinical license after you finish it. Plus, you will have more opportunities all around with a masters degree.

In order to be a clinical social worker that treats clients I had to get a masters degree in social work and then a license to practice. So depends on what you want to do.

Brianna,

If you want to be a licensed MSW, you will need a master's degree. It's pretty much the norm. However, I want to encourage you to make really sure this is what you want before you pursue it. It's a huge investment! Sadly, there are too many people who go straight from undergrad to grad school and then realize after the fact that they made a mistake. Talk to all the social workers you can. Find out what they DON'T like about their jobs. You need to hear this now. Every job of every kind has certain aspects that people don't like - Sometimes they are just little nuisance things. Other times they are more serious.

Also, if possible, try to find a job in an agency or organization that may help with tuition assistance.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Kim

A Masters Degree opens the door to be eligible to apply for the highest level license, very important for billing insurance companies for your services; for independent practice or for an employer. Look for Social Work programs that offer a bridge program to a Masters Degree. You earn your bachelor’s degree, go an extra year and get a Masters Degree vs. a separate 2 year Masters degree program. This will save you money!
