When I was a Freshmen (over 2 decades ago), my school had a Freshman Experience program that consisted of the following--Freshmen only dorms with more Resident Assistants than a typical dorm and a 1 hour credit class that we took in our first quarter on campus. There was also a Freshmen Orientation weekend where we received a tour, went to a football game, learned more about the school's traditions, and attended a club/activities fair.


For many schools, graduation rank is a key metric. They want their Freshmen to graduate.

For USC specifically, freshmen are granted "freshman forgiveness" which allows them to retake a course they may have failed their first year at USC without having the first grade impact their transcripts. This is incredibly helpful for freshmen who may be first-generation and are struggling with adapting to the rigor of college courses. I am unsure if this applies to other colleges/universities, but this is something offered by USC that greatly helps first-year students.
