Kim’s Answer

Alexis,

I know many lawyers who specialize in more than one area. The attorney I work for does Immigration law, Civil Rights, Employment Law, and some Criminal Defense. A lawyer cannot possibly know all areas of law,

As to criminal defense attorneys and prosecutors - you normally don't do both at the same time, however, many attorneys start out in prosecuting cases, and later switch to criminal defense. If you want to be a criminal defense attorney, starting out in the prosecutor's office will allow you to learn how those attorneys think. This will be helpful when you are trying to get a plea bargain for your client. Keep in mind, not many cases go to trial. Both civil and criminal cases tend to settle out of court.

Good question!
