Rachel’s Answer

Most internships are typically going to be 7-12 weeks. I would highly recommend trying to land at least 1-2 internships before you are graduated. This will put you in a great place in the early career job market. If your school offers co-ops, that is also another great option!

Karima’s Answer

An internship is a great way to understand what you want to do but also what you don't want to do.
Since it's not high stakes, it's a good way to try something out.
Usually internships are over the summer for a few months.
If there is something you have always wanted to try, I highly recommend doing an internship in it so you can decide if it's what you think you can see yourself doing long term before you do a full time job.

Mikaela’s Answer

Interning during the summer provides a few months of being able to see what a company is like. If possible, some companies also allow internships during the semester and will work around class schedules. Spending a few months at a company provides a good understanding of what it would be like to be there long term.

Maia’s Answer

Hi Nilan!

Summer internships are a great way to get enough exposure to a company to see if it's a good culture and industry fit for you. Oftentimes, one can extend an internship on a part-time basis during the school year if things work out during the summer.

While you're in school, i'd encourage you to try a variety of internships because staying with one company for too long, more than a year or so, can pigeonhole you into one industry. So, if you're in a stage where you're really not sure or you want to explore multiple industries, don't stay in one place too long.

Good luck!

Internship helps you test the water, get an idea of apart from Technical Skills, what are the other key skills needed to be successful. Most importantly, it gives you an overview of the culture of the Company, and how is it so different from a normal college life. The transition to a full time role becomes lot easier.

Whitney’s Answer

Hi Nilan - Oftentimes the duration of the internship will be driven by the company with set start and end dates, typically running 6-10 weeks. I'd suggest you first determine what type of internship you're looking for (industry, role, etc) and then begin your search. Many internship will be offered over the course of the summer so as not to interfere with your school year. An internship is meant to not only help you determine what you WANT to do long-term, but also to show you what you DON'T WANT to do. Take advantage of these opportunities and learn as much as you can and build as many relationships through networking - you never know when you may cross paths with someone again in the future! Good luck in your intern search!

Angela’s Answer

Hi Nilan,

I would recommend interning at a company throughout a semester or during a summer break. Working at a company for 3-4 months will give you a good sense of the culture, ability to make connections and learn more about the particular role/industry. If you try to get several internships while you are in school it will make your resume stronger when you are applying for full time work.

Good luck!

Julienne’s Answer

Hi Nilan!

Internships are a great way to test the waters and gain experience and exposure in fields that you're considering for your future. Most companies offer internships during the fall and spring semester on a part-time basis; and others summer internships that are typically 8-10 weeks in duration that allow you to work on a specific project while building your practical skills. I encourage you to try a variety of internships to help you hone in on what you'd like to do in your future.

I would say for as long as it takes you to fully understand the business or the position.

Once you understand the position of the internship and feel you can teach-back and have a firm understand of the company that you can become a mentor or the go to person for new hires that is when you will find yourself answering your own question and understanding the important iof knowledge reign supreme.
