Hi Isaiah! We all want to be successful in our academic work and have a social life too. My number suggestion is to be rigorous around time management by keeping a schedule. Its important to block out time for school, but also allow yourself to hang with friend and family. This may mean finding balances within your schedule and take some self-discipline. For example, if you have a big exam coming up but all your friends are going out the night before you may have to decline and focus on your studies but schedule time with your friends after the exam to enjoy their company and have a little time to unwind from the pressures of studying. Also depending on your class schedule, you can also dedicate a specific timeslot (maybe its Wednesday afternoons for a mid-week check in) to go to the library and solely dedicate an hour or two to your school work. This can help you to prevent procrastinating until the last minute for studying or writing a paper (which i was very guilty of during my school days)! Good luck!!

Hi Isaiah,

No worries, that happened to lots of us in college! The good news is you realize you need to dedicate more time to studying. You should be able to improve your study habits without sacrificing your social life by dedicating time in your schedule to studying, and treating like a class or meeting you can't miss - kind of like how you probably had study halls in high school. If you have blocks of time during the day time, that's a great time to get some studying done so you can socialize later. If your apartment or dorm is a distraction, try a study room in the library or student center. You likely have a class syllabus that tells your when major tests, papers or assignments are coming up, so you might put those on your calendar so you can carve out extra time there.

Nobody expects college students to stay at home studying on Friday or Saturday night, so just plan on those being out as study time options. But maybe Sunday afternoon or evening could work for study time for you? It all depends on how your class schedule works for you. Finding the time to study isn't all that hard, but it will require some self-discipline and the willingness to turn down that socializing offer because you really do need to study. And don't worry, there's always another party or event to go to. Best of Luck!

Betsy recommends the following next steps:

Find blocks of time in your schedule that you can treat as designated study halls. Self-discipline is key.
Prioritize study time around major tests, papers and assignments.
