Kim’s Answer

Ethan,

I don't know about in other states, but here in Texas, the annual income of ranchers varies widely, but I believe averages about $50,000. Keep in mind, that will often be for more than 40 hours per week.

There are many variables that affect the income. For example, if we are in a drought, and run out of hay, Texas ranchers might buy alfalfa from Colorado. It is much more expensive than producing their own hay. You can experience illnesses in your herd, need to repair or replace equipment, etc. The wide fluctuations in the cost of fuel is another example. You will learn to plan a budget, and factor in the cost of business operations, but, sometimes things come up.

This is assuming you want to run your own operation. If you go to work for the big ranching companies, you can make more, depending on what you do. I knew a man who repaired agricultural equipment, traveling the country as various crop seasons arrived, and he did very well.
