Has the Evaluating Factors of How Scholarships Are Given Changed Over the Years?

I heard that in the past, scholarships were more based on academics than on need and race/ethnicity, but now things have changed so that need and race/ethnicity are more weighted when choosing which candidate gets a scholarship--whether consciously or subconsciously. Is this true? This just refers to scholarships in general, as I assume many scholarships have differing factors for choosing winners.

Hi Leighlyn H. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

To add a bit to the answer already provided, I encourage those who seek scholarships to do their research into scholarships that are offered by private groups, civic societies and associations, in addition to scholarships that may be offered by academic institutions. As indicated, scholarships that are offered by private groups have, in the past, and continue to focus on specialized groups. In my case, I searched for scholarships that were intended for women in technology.

Hope helpful and best of luck!

I do not know if general academic scholarships have a bias on race or ethnicity. I do know that there are scholarships specifically created for different minority groups. For instance there are scholarships specifically for Latin American students as there is for African American students etc. There are also scholarships specifically for LBGT, children of Military,  students, Men only, Women only, Moms only etc. Here is a link to Minority scholarships. https://www.scholarships.com/financial-aid/college-scholarships/scholarships-by-type/minority-scholarships/
