I want to be a Marine Biologist. Is this a hard field to get a job in?

I dream of one day being a Marine Biologist. I just wonder how hard it will be to get a job in this field. I love the ocean but I have no knowledge of the careers that are offered in this field. #marine-biology

To answer your question about whether or not it's a "hard" field to get a job in, it is definitely more narrow compared to other jobs that have high growth rates. It's also very location-based, so you most likely need to live on the coast. However, it is not impossible. It just requires a little more research and networking.

David’s Answer

If you find that you truly love the work, there are jobs available. It is a difficult field to get a job in likely because the profession is so romanticized. However, the realities of the day-to-day work of a Marine Biologist as well as the educational requirements, tend to reduce the competition by the time you are actually looking for a job. So the reality is, if someone ends up really liking the actual work, they can likely find a job.

I would recommend exploring this potential career one step at a time.

David recommends the following next steps:

Try to identify your actual interests
Find an internship opportunity that falls within your interests
If necessary, reevaluate and repeat
Once you have found the area you actually want to work in, complete any advanced educational requirements and go get that job!
