G. Mark’s Answer

You have to understand that engineering is the general science of applying science to practical problems. As long as problems exist, there will be a need for engineers. Perhaps when we pass the singularity -- the point at which machines will be building other machines and can solve all our engineering problems themselves -- the need for engineers would decrease. I don't see that happening for awhile. There is also the phenomenon of Parkinson's Law wherein the needs tend to increase to consume any available resources. In this regard, humanity will likely never run out of problems to solve since whenever the biggest or most significant problems are addressed, people will spend more and more effort tweaking whatever they've already built. And those folks spending this effort will be engineers. Engineering itself may evolve quite a bit, but it will not decrease.

Thank you comment icon If only to reiterate the above answer and add to numbers in order to strengthen a point, there will always be a need for engineers. If we go back to basics whether, from a cataclysmic event or drastic lifestyle change due to lack of resources, humans will always want to improve their situation and engineers will be the ones to do this. If only to reiterate the above answer and to strengthen the point by numbers, there will always be a need for engineers.

Should our planet suffer from a cataclysmic event and/or humans required to make drastic lifestyle change due to Earth's lack of resources, humans will still want to improve their situation and engineers will be the ones to do this.

Michael’s Answer

Jason, the need for what engineers can do will never decrease. Job titles may come and go, but the need for someone who builds, optimizations, solves, thinks logically, assess variables, navigates the unknown, is willing to make mistakes and learn from them and get back up ... will always be needed in society ... that's what engineers do. We take our abilities and go into society in project management, supply chain, operations, marketing, sales, services, engineering, consulting, and much more. Taking on an engineering degree is not for everyone; it's rigorous and long hours, but it builds a foundation you can do a lot with afterwards. You may be surprised at how many engineers are enjoying success in a career with a title other than ‘engineer’.

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Visit a 4 year accredited engineering campus and talk with the engineering counselors as to the rigor of the curriculum and what companies hire them after graduation.
Talk with your parents, friends and family and ask if they know anyone with engineering degrees that will talk with you about their career
Visit a local business that aligned with the type of engineering they do and talk with them on their daily tasks.
