Is it possible to pursue two careers at the same time?

I have a passion for designing buildings (chose how the everything will be) and a passion for being a technology engineer. Is there a way to do both at the same time? #architecture

Adrienne’s Answer

Absolutely, you can pursue various interests at once. Remain careful not to stress yourself out. One career may involve more schooling and/or field work. However, you can always pursue major /field track and then begin pursuing another. Some companies offer their employees tuition reimbursement for another degree. However, your second degree may have to correlate to your job. So be creative and somehow tie your second interest to your job. Additionally, sometimes where you end up has littlest to do with your degree. Through college, working and networking, many doors can open.

Hi Brian,

Civil Engineering Technology

Civil engineering technicians assist engineers by surveying, drafting and performing other related activities for building roads, highways, waterways and public structures. Civil engineering technician careers can be gained through the completion of a degree or training program in the field or through on-the-job experience.

Education Information

Though it may not be required, employers seek candidates who have completed formal training. Civil engineering technology programs are available at the certificate, associate degree and bachelor's degree levels. Academic programs are offered at accredited schools, colleges or universities. Coursework examines surveying, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, steel design, statics and drafting. Programs are typically accredited through the ABET, which is the accreditation agency for engineering and technology programs. The following articles may help you decide on a civil engineering technology program.

  • Undergraduate Programs for Civil Engineering Technicians

  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology

  • Civil Engineering Bachelor's Degree

Civil Engineering Technician

The goal of civil engineering technicians is to solve technical issues related to the development of spaces to live, work and play. They often assist engineers in determining new ideas for research and development. The BLS reported that from 2012-2022, the total number of jobs for civil engineering technicians wasn't expected to change much, if at all. In May 2012, the median yearly salary for civil engineering technicians was $47,560.

Civil Engineering Technology Degree Program Information

Students may earn an associate's degree in civil engineering technology, although most jobs require a bachelor's degree in the subject. Although all civil engineering technology degree programs start with a foundation of science and math, the subjects studied aren't always as in-depth as a traditional civil engineering program. The science involved in the program is mainly physics, but the principles of design for steel and reinforced concrete, for example, are equally important. Courses for a civil engineering technology program include:

  • Civil engineering materials

  • Trigonometry

  • Structural design

  • Construction cost estimation

  • Engineering graphics

  • Statistics

  • Surveying

  • Applied calculus

  • Engineering hydrology

Maria’s Answer

Actually both of your passions, may be more connected than you thing. Buildings today more than ever are designed around technology and the other way technology is so integrated in the way we leave.
I will advise you to set your priorities and decide if you want to be an architect specialized in the technological aspect of buildings or you'll be better as an engineer working for an architectural firm.
In today's work market imagination is an asset and have something that differentiate you from others a must. Do your research on companies that are in the fields of your interest and seek the advise of people who has professional experience in buildings, architecture or engineering. Remember you are young and step by step you'll get to the place that you dream of. Wish you the best.
