I would encourage you to look up annual salaries for sound engineering technicians based on location and “tenure” (entry level, mid, etc) using Glassdoor and Payscale so you can get a low to high range.

Make use of LinkedIn to search for people who are current sound engineers and see if they’d be generous with their time to help you figure out what’s market value for a sound engineer technician with your abilities, skills, experience, etc. This is a good way to put feelers out and see if your range is reasonable, and to get any other insight from that individual’s journey.

As noted above, the best approach involves research -- but before you can start that research, you need to define what you want to do. "Sound technician" covers a lot of possible jobs -- are you interested in live sound reinforcement (concert sound? theater? ) Radio/TV work? Recording studio work? Repair and installation? Commercial sound applications, like paging? The list goes on and on...

Once you narrow down your interests, then you can start looking for jobs in your target location to see what the market is like. Bear in mind that for some jobs in the sound engineering field, you may need to join a union (which may involve serving an apprenticeship), and for others, you may need to travel; that expense may impact your decisions. Finally, keep up to date with the state of the market -- digital technology has dramatically changed the field of sound engineering and reinforcement in just the last few years. You may or may not need to acquire computer, hardware, and repair skills, depending on the avenue you choose.

Good luck with your search!
