"Let me be the first to say that the gaming industry is almost a trillion dollar industry, but keep in mind when an industry is this large there tends to be a lot of failure before success; but don't think of failure as a negative. It's totally possible one can design and toss out a thousand projects before one creates a successful one.
The degree isn't really as important as one might think, it's primary purpose would be to introduce you to technology and languages that otherwise you might not be interested in, at least innately. However, that being said a degree in graphic design or computer science wouldn't be exactly a bad thing but it's not the end all be all of this industry.
What I recommend would be to learn a few basic concepts and applications that will help you jump start your post-secondary education, Unity3D is a great vector and shading tool that you can tinker around with and get a great understanding of how meshes and camera angles work in platform games, you could also download several LUA, PERL and Java tool kits to get a better understand of what the back end looks like.
If you are 100% set on doing this I would try those applications I mentioned above, join a few indie gamer groups online or find friends who are also interested in learning and developing games; and in your spare time hash out a few low key and simplistic game concepts to see how this all goes together, and who knows you might make a few interesting things and even if they aren't exactly profitable they at least put you miles ahead of people who don't take that initial plunge."

My first job after graduate school was with IBM and I also was with a computer consulting firm. Best degrees would be in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Schools similar to Georgia Tech have both degrees.

Well, the basics to know would be basic assembly language and structure. This is learned at such schools as Decry or Heald university. You would need to know programming and coding. GSP or Gaming and Simulations Programming. Of which I obtained while attending Decry University.
If you are attempting to learn on your own as an "Indie" then I would suggest the easiest and most commonly used program today; Unity3D. It is user friendly and with basic knowledge and a concept, you can create some really amazing visuals. I would also suggest learning, if available to you FlashMOD which is also a very simple program.
