What about when you graduate from a department that is not commercial & fashionable in your country, people who didn’t have the chance to study it are not able even to understand the meaning. This department/job is new & fresh to your country. So, if you love it you travel to another country that you know they will appreciate it & give you a professional position or stay to your country and start working to other places and you always connect it with your k knowledge you have?

Hey Kate, sounds like you have an important choice to make very early in your life/career. Super exciting! The way I understand your options is: do you stay close to home and find a job that is available but that you did not go to university for or do you try your luck abroad in the field that you chose.

It really depends on what you value more. If you are very passionate about this department/job that you chose, it makes you happy and motivates you to wake up in morning and do it, if it is brand new and likely to become more important/appreciated in the future, then go for it! Look for organizations abroad that offer positions in this area and apply! I work in Silicon Valley in the USA and I'm from Europe. I moved here because I really like the vibe, the intercultural setting and the job opportunities compared to my home country. I works for me and I don't regret leaving.

However I know people who never move abroad because they know they won't like living anywhere else but home. I also know people who move abroad for a job or career and then miss home, their old friends and family and are not happy with the change they made.

So it really depends on what you value more right now. Also consider this: some choices seem difficult because you think they are permanent and will change the course of the rest of your life. But usually, that is not the case. If you don't like a choice you made (career or otherwise) you can usually reverse it. But if you never tried, you will never know what might have happened. So why not go abroad for a while, see how you like it, then return to your home country or city after a few years if you want to. If you work in a brand new area, you could use your time abroad to learn and become a true expert. Then when you get older, are ready for another change or just ready to go back home, this area might have become popular/more important in your home country as well. You will get an excellent job right back home and will be known as the expert/pioneer who has done this longer than anybody else around you. :)

Anyway, no one can make the decision for you. But I believe you can only regret the things in life that you did not do. Good luck!

Lara recommends the following next steps:

Go online and look up countries/areas/cities where your field of study is really big. Make a list of companies that are known for it. Look at their career pages for jobs, connect with their recruiters.
Look up any work visa requirements and options. Within Europe you should be good to work anywhere but outside of Europe you will likely require a work visa and not all companies will sponsor one in all cases.
Figure out your plan/timeline. Personally I moved abroad, then found a job. This is risky, especially if you don't have much money saved up straight out of school. It's better to get a job offer first, then move. But companies prefer to higher locally.
Thank you comment icon Wow Lara. Thank you so much for your words, for the time you devoted to think about my question. Your advices are really good & valuable. It is worth to think about it. I have already think about my plans here in my country. I want to connect my first degree from this department with a second one from another. Anyway. I have to finish first. I am over it in a few months. So maybe I will give it a try with exams for another department to make the connection that I have in my mind. My department is Social & Cultural Anthropology. I can relate it with any other department I want. But I will think about abroad because maybe there I can find people who can understand me more and develop more my knowledge on this. It’s a big thank you. Kate
Thank you comment icon Hey Kate, glad I could help you a little bit. Adding another degree that can complement your first one is definitely also a valid option! Good luck again, I'm convinced you can figure it out and make the choice that's right for you :) Lara P

Kate,

You have to go where the evolution is taking place to obtain data, resources and networks in order to return and to implement your skills and knowledge in this new field within your own country.
