Sheila’s Answer

Hi Tania: Art director positions typically require a bachelor's degree in an art or design major such as fine art, visual communications or digital media. Depending on their industry, art directors may have several years of work experience in graphic design, photography, illustration or other fields. Some art directors pursue a master's degree in fine arts or business administration to prepare for a leadership role.

Classes you'll need to take are website design, graphic arts, commercial art, and photography. In addition, you'll need great writing and speaking skills in English and speech classes.

Depending on the university you want to go to, also research other schools art programs. Classes could vary from university to university.

Susan’s Answer

I'll add that taking life drawing and concept drawing throughout college is just as important as concept/graphic design, any software related classes, typography, color theory, photography, etc....These are generally 4 hour or so intense session related to learning to "see". As an Art Director these skills will help you translate ideas quickly in sketch form (be those static or more storyboard) for others to understand and visualize.

I went to a college focused on art (and yes there were other academics like art history, history, writing, business) and have a BFA (bachelor of fine arts). But have known many peers, or team members that have BA's and/or a MFA's. I worked my way through college, so an MFA was not in the cards, and have had a successful creative career without it.

Goof luck!
