some updates are for the Firmware/BIOS of a system. The BIOS comes pre-installed on a PC and is the first software that is run when you power on the system. Since BIOS is a "basic input-output system" some "older" systems may require external disks to perform the update. Newer generations of hardware provide Operating System (OS) based tools for BIOS updates.

Computers need updates to address some of the following:
- Bug(Logical Errors) Fixes
- Optimized Software for better performance
- New Features
- Security Patches
External drives are needed for BIOS/Firmware updates on the hardware. With the latest hardware it is becoming less prevalent as most hardware vendors are bringing tools to update them from OS.
