James Constantine’s Answer

Hello Juliana,

A virus is a type of malicious software that, once executed, replicates itself by inserting its code into other programs or the boot sector of the infected device. It can cause a range of harmful effects on both computers and mobile devices.

In terms of hardware, a virus does not directly damage the physical components of a computer or phone. However, its actions can lead to indirect damage through overheating, power surges, or other means.

For instance, a virus may consume significant system resources, such as CPU cycles and memory, causing the device to slow down or even crash. In extreme cases, it may cause the operating system to become unstable or corrupt files, leading to hardware failures. Additionally, some viruses are designed to open backdoors for hackers to gain unauthorized access to the device, potentially putting its hardware at risk.

Moreover, viruses can spread through various means, including email attachments, downloaded software, and infected websites. They can also be transmitted via removable media such as USB drives and CDs. Once a virus infects a device, it can spread to other connected devices and networks.

It is important to note that preventing viruses from infecting your device involves using antivirus software and practicing safe online behavior. This includes avoiding suspicious emails and websites, keeping your software up-to-date, and using strong passwords.
