Hi Ruud. I'm a member of the CareerVillage staff, and although I have never been a USCIS officer, I wanted to make sure you got the answer to your question. It's a relatively specialized field so it will take us a little while to track down some USCIS officers to answer your questions based on their experience. Here are a few things that I've learned about getting a job as an immigration officer, based on our research:
First, it's important to note that USCIS has roughly 18,000 employees, divided into a huge number of functions. That means that there is going to be a lot of variety in what types of jobs are available to you. Therefore the first step for you in the short run is going to be trying to figure out exactly what types of roles excite you about working at USCIS / in immigration. Take a moment to jot some notes to yourself on what you think the job entails, and what excites you about it. Get personal with this step -- be honest with yourself. Then I'd suggest that you try to get an idea of what jobs are available at USCIS on the USAJobs.gov website in order to (a) make sure the job you want is what you think it is, and (b) figure out what the exact job titles and stated requirements are. USAJobs.gov is the website where the great majority of government agencies post jobs that they are looking to hire for.
Second, I would check out the student programs that USCIS runs to see if there is a program you can apply for. Here's a link: http://1.usa.gov/10I7Kaw Ideally you can get some internship experience early, before completing college.
A word of caution: Some of the content on the USCIS careers website hasn't been updated since 2010 or so, which means that it may not be the latest and greatest information. Hopefully we can get some USCIS officers to weigh in here as well.
