This a great question. I was blessed to learn early in life when I was in high school that my passion was multifamily housing. My education and career path took several twists and turns given the economy and where I was located. I ultimately ended up in commercial mortgage loan production with a nationwide FHA mortgagee headquartered in Washington, DC. Given the economy, they transferred me to different offices across the country. I was willing to re-locate as needed. I attended college courses after hours as well as MBA-industry related courses. I had mentors early on, and learned to be flexible and open to different options along the way --- FHA mortgagee (multifamily loan processor, market analyst), FHA co-insurance lender (multifamily loan origination, underwriting, asset management, and loan work-out), life insurance company (commercial appraiser, equity analyst), large bank (commercial correspondent lender), community bank (commercial direct lender), conduit lending (commercial origination, underwriting, asset management, and loan work-out), and Agency lending (multifamily credit underwriting). The best employment opportunities are located in Primary markets (Washington, DC, New York City, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, Dallas, TX and so on). I hope this helps - best wishes!

I started my career in multifamily as a leasing agent for a Residential Property Management company over 20 years ago. This job led me to a very successful professional path including sales, marketing, communications, project management, budgeting, contract management and relationship management. I would have never imagined my first job as a leasing agent out of college would have given me so many transferrable skills. Multifamily has many different career opportunities available.
