Hi Haley,

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary you can expect to earn with a career as a veterinarian is $92,570. This number takes into account all specialties and all levels of experience, so your salary will depend on these and other factors. Most veterinarians make between $64,390 and $107,190 with the top ten percent earning over $145,000 annually. As you can see, earning a six-figure salary is definitely possible in this field.

In some locations, you’ll be able to make more as a veterinarian than in others. Vets typically make more in locations where they are in high demand. The states with the highest averages for vet salaries are as follows:

  • Connecticut: $126,550

  • New Jersey: $125,790

  • District of Columbia: $120,000

  • Pennsylvania: $113,810

  • Delaware: $112,070

You can also make more money by working in a city rather than working in a more rural area. Again, salary rates differ based on location, but you can find the top paychecks as a veterinarian in the following metropolitan areas:

  • Port St. Lucie, FL: $174,810

  • Lakeland-Winter Haven, FL: $163,880

  • Newark-Union, NJ: $153,800

  • Dover, DE: $149,650

  • Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA: $148,050

  • Harrisonburg, VA : $141,470

  • Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta, CA: $140,100

  • Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT: $135,400

  • San Antonio, TX: $134,620

  • Atlantic City-Hammonton, NJ: $130,710

Keep in mind that while your salary will be higher in most cities, lost of living is also lower in more rural areas. So, make sure you consider your options carefully – the highest salary might not mean the highest overall amount of money in your pocket at the end of each month.
