This depends on your current knowledge and skill. If you are starting off as a beginner with no prior experience you would want to enroll in a welding program to gain knowledge. You can enroll in a course through a community college or trade school. The school will assist you in determining what type of welding you are interested in learning as a trade. There are a variety of welding processes. Each type of welding requires different tests. You will first want to determine the type of welding you are interested in and seek out a course to learn the skills and work with the school to help you determine a path forward. It can take as little as one month and up to six months to earn your first certification depending on the method you seek. My husband is a welder and began his career with welding as an aerospace fabricator. He then went to school and learned a variety of methods for welding. He tested and gained certification and must get recertified every six months.
