Darrell’s Answer

Absolutely! I sugggest 1 college of your dreams, 1 you think you can get into, and 1 backup, just in case. By the way I do know many people who did go to their back up college and really enjoyed it, and others who did really well and transferred to a 'better' school later. Good luck!

Hi Emmanuel:  I like all of the advice everyone has given to you. Here is another reason to apply to more than 1 college... (like 3 - 5 colleges).  Different colleges will offer different financial packages for you.  You might be surprised at how much money one college will provide for you. Likewise, you might be disappointed how little money some colleges provide.  By applying to a few schools, you can compare financial offers that makes sense for  you and your family.    Good luck, Emmanuel !

Jolanda’s Answer

Absolutely! No matter the types (State, Ivy, International) of colleges you're applying to, at least apply to 3. But, 5 would be better.

Right out of college, I worked as a career and education coordinator for seniors applying to college. Along the way, I found that these five types of schools work well for creating a selection process.

  1. Safety - a school that you're positive you'll be accepted to (your grades and SATs align with what they're looking for)
  2. Major-focused - a school that has the major you're hoping to explore or has other major options that you think you'd enjoy
  3. Favorite - a school that makes you excited to go there! You love the programs they offer, the location, the professors, etc.
  4. Reach - a school that may be tough for you to get into, but one that you'd love to attend. Or, maybe one that you'd be proud to attend.
  5. Another safety - it never hurts to apply to one more schools that you're very likely to get accepted to. Getting in is getting more competitive and you want to make sure you at least have 1 offer come April.

Any combination of these five (i.e. safety and major-focused, favorite and reach, or another safety and favorite) work well too!

Lastly, check out the common app, it allows you to use one application to apply to many schools. Here's the link: www.commonapp.org

Good luck with your application process!

Jolanda recommends the following next steps:

Use Google to search a few majors you might be interested in.
For each major, find 3 colleges that offer it.
Decide which 2 of the 3 , best suits you (i.e. location, cost, sport teams, interests)
Repeat for each major. You should end up with a list that names a major and then 2 colleges that you like that offers it.
See if any colleges show up on more than one list. Have that college or those colleges be where you start your school visits or admissions department calls.

Absolutely! You have your favorite but what if you are not admitted. Always have a backup. I would recommend applying to at least 5.

I had 7 grad school applications! Good luck!

Ijeoma’s Answer

I think it is good to apply in more than 1 college . It will increase your chances of making it to one of the colleges. If you decide to apply in only one college and at the end of the day , you were not successful, you might lose admission that year. At the same time ,you may start feeling fustrated seeing you mate that have made it.

Thank you comment icon Thx and I Will start other planing Emmanuel

E. C’s Answer

Emmanuel C,

Remember one thing for the rest of your life never put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to various colleges atleast 6 to be exact. Also it is good to have your name inserted into various college regristries for networking purposes later in life. I wish you the best on your journey.

Isis’s Answer

Definitely yes! You must have several options to apply. Remember that even if we have a preference, we cannot focus only on that one. It is imperative that we have at least 3 options so that you do not fall behind. It is also important that you evaluate the educational and financial assistance offers for each option. This could put into perspective which is the best option.

Amy (Scheffer)’s Answer

Hi - yes you should definitely apply to more than 1 college. I would recommend applying to 2 stretch schools, 2 middle of the road schools and 2 safety schools (at least). Applying to more schools will increase your chances of getting the best financial package. From there, you will have options to pick the best school for you based on your criteria! Good luck!
