Hi Assetou,

I would definitely check with your local career centre, start networking, create a LinkedIn profile.

Find companies you would like to work for.

Your first job should be an enjoyable experience, surround yourself with hard working and like minded people.

Best of luck to anyone looking for a job for the first time

Don't be afraid to look in multiple places, or through multiple channels at one time! The more resources you use to find a job, the better luck you will have.

  • School career center
  • Indeed.com and other job sites - don't only look there, but post your resume as well.
  • Local staffing companies in the industry you're looking at. Send them your resume
  • Talk to other people who have had internships to see if they know of any openings at companies they've interned at
  • Check out specific the websites of specific companies you're interested in to see if they have job openings, or if you can submit your resume for the future if there isn't anything on there now

The biggest advice again, don't limit yourself to looking for a job just through one resource.

Polina’s Answer

The most vital step you can take to find a job is to start searching and building up your resume early on. You are much more likely to find a job after college if you have built up one or two internships under your belt. Doing summer internships can help you build reputation within the company early on, as well as to expose you to life after college. Companies are much more likely to hire interns as opposed to full time engineers, as hiring someone for a 3-6 term is a significantly lower risk to the company if the employee underperforms. When looking over resumes for recent graduates, summer internships, teaching assistant experience provide the hiring managers with the idea of the candidate's work ethic and experience.

If you are at the point where you recently graduated and cannot influence your experience history, I would recommend finding personal connections within the companies. You can do so by reaching out to your friends and colleagues on LinkedIn, as well as connecting with industry professionals over genuine curiosity at networking events in your city. Personal connections can recommend you into the company, which will help you standout from other applicants.

Definitely start at the career services office of your college. They can help guide you to different professions, skill assessments, job fairs and job opportunities. If you already know what field and type of job start looking online for companies in your area or where you want to work. Have a good resume and profile on LinkedIn.
