Cindy’s Answer

Izabella,

I am so glad you are considering a job in the sciences.

My vote is for you to join me in Cybersecurity, as there is only 11% women in this field. It's an exciting field and you would find that every day has a new challenge, a new thing for you to learn and you can make a difference either for a company or for a group of companies like I do for Cisco Systems.

I love what I do and how I get to help people around the world.

Thank you for your question and your interest!

Cindy recommends the following next steps:

Take a free class from MIT: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-858-computer-systems-security-fall-2014/
Investigate Hackathons in your area
Investigate classes you could take at Cisco: https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/community/it_careers/student

Jim’s Answer

Good morning, Cindy has a great answer. My career started off as a network administrator which gave me a wealth of information how how servers, client workstations, email, etc worked. In other words I learned the business side first. Actually, I learned and did this first before there was a thing called cybersecurity.

For the past five years I've refocused to doing just cybersecurity. It's a specialty in networking. I've also chosen not to be a firewall guru ( no offense to anyone) to being a generalist in all things cyber. Email appliances, DNS, firewalls, security documentation, policies, endpoint (laptops, workstations, SCADA, mobile, etc), SEIM, etc.

The overall community is looking for great people, you are invited. Read some more about what's happening.

Thank you comment icon HI Izabella Is great to see more women colleagues coming to the IT field. My personal opinion is in line with Jim, I'm an administrator for many years now and i love it, I really like to be close to people and give them my support Cesar Alberto Outon Leiro
