What does a Materials Science Engineer do on a day-to-day basis?

Hi, I am a senior in high school. I was wondering what a typical day looks like for a materials science engineer and was it what you expected when you declared your major? #engineering #science #materials

What a day looks like for a materials engineer varies depending on the role you're in. If you're in research or manufacturing, your day is going to be pretty different than if you're in a management or leadership role, which many materials engineers take on as they move forward in their career. I think one thing that might be surprising is how much you need to work with other people - almost all of the work happens in teams, and there is a lot of coordination, meetings, and communication (over email, phone, in person, or virtual meetings) in order to make sure that everyone is one the same page and working effectively toward the same goal. However, if you major in engineering in college, you'll do a lot of team projects, and you'll work on problem sets with groups of people, so those experiences all give you a sense of what it'll be work to work in teams.

Hello,

Material Scientist and Material Engineer are two different areas of expertise. As a material Scientist, you will help Mechanical/Civil/Chemical...Engineers to choose correct materials. When Engineers get order from customer about tools/designs etc they typically like to replace existing materials with a different one. To replace materials on an existing tool/design Engineer's need to know properties of proposed material. Engineers will as Material Scientists for data sheets/properties etc. Material Scientists also provide novel materials to build an existing tool.

As a Material Engineer, you will have to evaluate existing material, analyze failure (if any), choose alternative material to accomplish design challenge and propose correct material for customer application.

As a career path, material scientist has less exposure to customer. Material Scientists help Engineers to choose correct material for application.

Good Luck
