Thomas’s Answer

Really depends on what type of security you are looking for. Larger security companies have many divisions just like a police department. Patrol, bike, foot patrol, static, armed, unarmed ,canine uniformed, plain clothes. Industrial, energy, hospitality, transportation , educational, events, government, hospital and investigation.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "expect". Do you mean in terms of salary? Hours worked? Nature of work?

To address each of the above:

  • Salary: very low, if not minimum wage. The job will be low skill, and thus not require much education or training. Accordingly, it will not pay well, and you'll rarely see people actively pursuing a career as a security officer/guard. The alternative would be if you were looking at the Secret Service or other types of high-profile executive security or VIP security. In those roles, the information I'm sharing would not apply necessarily.
  • Hours worked: potentially all kinds of hours. Days, nights, weekends, holidays. Many security guards work overnight shifts (11 PM - 7 AM for example). In addition, you can reasonably expect to work off hours like weekends and holidays.
  • Nature of work: repetitive. Likely consisting of monitoring security feeds, signing in guests, foot patrols, parking enforcement, etc
