Aaron’s Answer

Hi Brian,

At my University, Chaminade University of Honolulu in Honolulu, Hawaii the general elective courses such as English and Algebra are usually 1 hour within Monday through Friday per week depending on how many days the class is scheduled for. Depending on your major core classes such as nursing classes they are usually 2 hours long instead of one hour because they cover a lot of topics in one day. If you have a lab course sometimes the class is 2 hours long because you use lab equipment such as the electronic microscope to view different glass slides of specimens and dissect animals such as pigs for human anatomy and physiology. Hope this helps.

-Thank you,
Aaron

Jay’s Answer

Hi Brian,

College classes vary by the amount of time spent in the classroom, usually from 3-5 hours per class per week. At my college, University of Texas, at Ausin, most classes were 3 hours per week, being either Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays for 1 hour or twice weekly for 1.5 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I did have some introductory language classes that were 5 hours per week, once per day.

If you take 12 hours or more total (for instance, 3 four-hour classes), you will be considered a full-time student. Taking fewer hours than this is called being a part-time student.

Most colleges estimate at least 2 hours of study outside of class per hour of class -- there's a lot of reading! If you take four classes, a 12 hour schedule, expect to spend at least 36 hours on your studies - 12 hours in class, and 24 hours reading and doing homework.

College is very different than high-school: you get to spend more time working on things at your own pace, when you want to work on them, and less overall time in the classroom. For me, this was a welcome change.

I hope this helps!

Thank you comment icon Brian: I'm back in college after graduated from University 24 years ago. I need to constantly retool my skills and knowledge due to the rapid changes in technology. On average, I spent about 10 hours a week for one on-line class. That includes read text book, read online paper, watch recorded lectures, watch supplemental youtube videos. Answer class discussion questions. Read and response to class on-line discussions. Complete weekly assignment (2 ~ 3 page paper). Jackson Ku
