What opportunities are available for people who want to be in the Interior Design career?

I live in Charlotte, NC and there aren't many open opportunities for younger people under 18. It's very hard to learn about different events or clubs that are happening in Charlotte so I never really know about things that relate to my interest. #design #interior #decorator

After h.s. graduation, look into interior design programs at community colleges. Many have credit classes leading to an associates degree in interior design. I wouldn't waste your time with taking non-credit classes since the people teaching them may or may not have an educational background in design. Start by just taking one or two classes and working part time. It would be best if you can find a job in a retail store that offers design services. This way you will be getting some exposure. Stores like Pottery Barn, Lazy Boy, Ethan Allen, IKEA, etc. would be good options.

Thank you comment icon Working in a design related job as stated earlier, would be a good start, even fabric stores or anywhere you can learn more about different styles and eras of design , join blogs that speak about design , get books from the library , check Pinterest or Instagram for famous designer sites , then you can start to form a personal style and be aware of current trends and innovations! I would recommend some work at your college's facilities office. Most have an architectural design or building operations departments where you could help file and learn the processes. They are in need of filing help. Always read and look at everything that you can to start and appreciate all that Interior Designer's can bring to the table. Good luck!
