Is majoring in Sports Medicine the best major that will help a person become a sports physical therapist?

I am currently a high school senior year interested in becoming a sport physical therapist; however, I do not know if majoring in sports medicine is best option for a person wanting to become a sport physical therapist. I want to help athletes rehabilitate their bodies after an injury and make a plan with them so that they may not injure themselves again. #medicine #sports #physical-therapist

Steven’s Answer

Hi! I wish you luck in your journey! My name is Steven , I am not in sports medicine myself but many of my peers in Kinesiology at Umass did go on into that field! Umass is a top 5 program in the country for exercise science and would definitely be a strong foundation of knowledge for that field!

Misha’s Answer

There are a lot of different ways you can work with athletes -- physical therapist, massage therapist, athletic trainer, strength and conditioning coach, and many others. (I've spent enough time being injured that I've worked with many!) You could pursue some of these paths by getting certifications during or after college, or through medical school. If you're starting to look at colleges, check out some schools with a Kinesiology department. I took an intro kinesiology course at UMass, which offered a decent perspective on the different career paths related to sports medicine and exercise science.
