Interior Design is a growing profession that is becoming more and more related with architecture and construction management.

The very first thing you need to do, if you're really interested in design, is look for a university that has a credited program directly related to interior design. Interior Design is a Fine Arts degree, and you can achieve a BFA directly related to interior design. It is very challenging because it's related to art. Knowing some aspect of drawing is helpful but not entirely necessary because you are taught to do this through your education.

As a designer you can work in many programs. Architectural Firm, Kitchen/Bathroom design, Construction company that offers design/build. If you're very skilled with drafting, most companies will hire you in this capacity first, before you can gain experience as a designer - or - you can work as a design assistant for someone.

North Carolina is very well known for furniture manufacturing. A retail furniture store hires interior designers. Tile shops, fabric stores, these are many of your options.

But first... please look into college / university and get good training. This is very important.

I do not know where your are now in your process of getting started, but you must first get an education however you choose to go about that; perhaps via experience, formal training, or both.

Also, to get you thinking about what it may take to get there I suggest you go to ASID.org. Here's a link..

https://www.asid.org/content/becoming-interior-designer#.VuF6gZwrLNM.

Also, check out career builder.com and indeed.com. Read the Interior Designer job descriptions; do you have the skill-set the employers are looking for? If not, start to build up your skills. You'll want to know how to draw, conceive original ideas, innovate, communicate graphically, and learn the vernacular of the designer. You may also consider an education in architecture. Many architects practice interior design.

Good luck!

Elizabeth
