Josue,

As a police officer, you will take a gazillion classes. Starting with the academy, which is probably about six months. You will take academic classes, including a lot of classes on law - traffic law, constitutional law, criminal law, alcohol law, family law, mental health law, juvenile law, etc., report writing, traffic accident investigation, use of force, race relations, etc. tactical classes -firearm, baton, mace, taser, open handed combat, high speed driving, cpr, etc.

After the academy, you will take in-service training, about 40 hrs a year, to get updates in changes to laws and dept. policies. Plus usually more training. As you move up, you will take specialized training, and hopefully become a Field Training Officer, responsible for training other officers, a firearms instructor, range officer, classroom instructor, certified intoxilyzer operator, mental health officer, narcotics officer, etc.

In law enforcement, it is very important to stay current with laws and court cases.

I hope this helps!

Kim
